Fonterra gets OK for Cobden fresh milk plant extension

16 April 2015

EXPANSION works at Fonterra's new fresh milk plant in Cobden have been given the green light.

Corangamite Shire issued the dairy giant a planning permit to extend the existing building and install new tanks. The plant will be used to bottle fresh milk for supermarket chain Woolworths.

The permit will allow Fonterra to build a 25-metre extension on the southern end of the building, which will include a new loading dock and canopy.

Eight new tanks are also planned, with the tallest measuring 25 metres.

Fonterra signed a 10-year contract with Woolworths to supply it's Select label fresh milk throughout Victoria.

It has invested $31 million to upgrade the former National Foods factory on the Cobden-Warrnambool Road, creating 30 jobs.

Corangamite Shire councillor Jo Beard said she was extremely pleased the permit had been granted. "This is a great result for both Cobden and the Corangamite Shire," she said.

Fonterra hopes to have the plant online in the coming months and has started recruiting staff for the new plant.
